McKinney Falls State Park is an easy 20 – 30 minute drive from wherever you might live in Austin.  This wonderful state park is tucked into the woods right across the road from Bergstrom International Airport.  Onion Creek runs through the middle of the park.  It is a perfect setting for a day of fun and games, laughter and good food with family and friends from our St. Matthew’s family.

We will set up headquarters at the Group Dining Pavilion beginning at noon.  If you want to come for lunch, you are invited to bring your own picnic lunch.  Bring your bikes, strollers and wagons (or your jogging shoes) because there are miles and miles of paved hike-and-bike trails.  Some folks might prefer to take off on a guided nature walk or to explore the ruins of the grist mill and settlers’ cabins, or the Indian rock shelter.  Of course, you’ll want to try your hand at skippin’ rocks in the creek.  We’ll have the volleyball net set up for those of you who care to play, and of course, we’ll have a “friendly” softball game or two during the course of the afternoon.  If sitting in the shade is more your style, we’ll have cards and dominoes and checkers ready to roll.  We will have a special slate of activities planned just for our youth.

This will be a full day of come-and-go fun designed for all ages.  If baseball or soccer conflicts in the morning or you just want to sleep in late, come out after lunch!  Big plans for Saturday evening?  Come out early in the day and be home in plenty of time.  Driving after dark is off limits?  You’ll be home by sunset!  Don’t want to drive at all?  Organize a carpool of friends from St. Matthew’s!  Kids need a nap in the afternoon?  Come out before or after nap time…or better yet, bring a blanket and let them nap in the shade of the beautiful huge old oak trees!

One of the highlights of the day will be a homemade ice cream taste-off!  Dig out that freezer and stir up a batch of homemade ice cream for our first annual Homemade Ice Cream Dip – Off!  (We’ll be looking for expert ice cream tasters on site to determine a winner!)

A full afternoon of fun in the sun (or the shade) is sure to work up an appetite, so we’ll be serving hotdogs and hamburgers at 5:00.  We’ll give you time for a little fun after an early dinner, then will gather at 7:00 for s’mores and a good old fashioned sing-a-long around the campfire (providing there isn’t a fire ban!).  We’ll have you homebound before sunset, and wishing you could come back tomorrow!
