BLANKETS FOR SAFE PLACE AND BEYOND

There is a little-known ministry around St. Matthew’s for knitters and people who crochet. We make knitted or crocheted blankets for children at Safe Place. Barbara Borden has been coordinating this ministry. When we make a blanket or afghan, Barbara takes them to Safe Place where they are given to the children who are sheltered there. The child receives a colorful blanket to keep. This special gift helps them adjust to the new environment and gives them a source of comfort and protection as well as a feeling of ownership. Barbara has also been called upon to contribute blankets to the United Nations, so some of our blankets have made it out into the world.

Expert knitters/crochet people may make an entire blanket; beginners may make individual pieces which can be joined by others to create patch-worked blankets. There are even people who are willing to teach people who are interested in learning to knit or crochet. Some of Barbara’s ladies are homebound, but are able to spend time each day working on these blankets. It’s a wonderful feeling making something with your hands that will bring comfort to a child.

Please let Barbara Borden (345-0727 or barbaraborden116@hotmail.com ) or Cheryl McLay (346-1712 or clm@austin.rr.com ) know if you would be interested in particpating in this Blanket Ministry.
