With people being more open about their job status, chances are you know someone who is looking for a job. You may also know or even be someone who is looking for another opportunity due to either frustration or a vision for a change.
Twenty-two years ago out of an effort to help a fellow parishioner, a few leaders formed the St. Matthew’s Job Support. It is a ministry aimed at helping those seeking new opportunities in their work. Many members of this parish have assisted in these past years.
Currently the active supporters of this ministry are Clyde Prestwood who began in 1986, and Bob Ascott who began in 1996.
We meet every Monday at Noon in Room B14 and everyone is welcome. This is a ministry supporting both members of St. Matthew’s and the community. We are not a placement service, but have helpful tips on job hunting and can provide that "start of the week" support that many job searches need.
A key part of the process is help that is provided from other members of the group. In a friendly, noncompetitive environment each member can share his or her thoughts and suggestions for others to consider.
The supporters are able to provide suggestions on job search strategies, contacts in the Austin area, and referrals to other support and networking organizations. Our goal is to provide encouragement along with recommendations aimed at securing that next employment opportunity.
Independent of the reason for a job search, it usually becomes frustrating, tedious, and sometimes worse. Our Job Support Group is one ministry aimed at easing some of the challenges being faced by job seekers.
So, whether you are in a job search yourself or know of someone affected by the job challenges of Austin, suggest that they join us on Mondays at noon and participate in one of the long-term ministries of St. Matthew’s.
