Discovery Class February, 2012

The Discovery Class, an introduction to the Episcopal Church and St. Matthew's in particular, is offered for those who are new to the Episcopal Church or new to St. Matthew's.

Discovery class has begun, in anticipation of Bishop Andy Doyle's visit to the parish on February 19th. Please join us from 9:15-10:15 a.m. in Room B-18 in the basement below the Sanctuary.

Classes in February, led by the Rev. Susan Barnes and others, will cover the following:

  • The History of the Episcopal Church
  • The Bishop is coming to St. Matthew's on Sunday, February 19, will you be baptized, confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church?
  • How can you become involved at St. Matthew’s?
  • How can you follow God in daily life?

Topics Addressed in the Typical Discovery Class

Introduction to the Episcopal Church: A basic introduction to the Episcopal Church and attempt to respond to the primary questions and concerns of the group. Attention will be given to the Sunday service and your questions about the meaning and purpose of various parts of the worship service.

What Episcopalians Believe: A discussion of the Nicene Creed and the various prayers of the Prayer Book that shape the beliefs of Episcopalians. Special attention will be given to the services of Holy Eucharist and Holy Baptism.

Episcopalians and the Bible: A discussion of the diverse ways Holy Scripture is read and interpreted in the Episcopal Church. We will discuss the ways Episcopalians balance the authority of Holy Scripture with the traditions of the church and the gift of human reason given by God.

The Book of Common Prayer: A discussion of the Book of Common Prayer as a source of theology and a guide for prayer.

The Episcopal Church: A discussion of the history of the Episcopal Church; its structure, laws and governing bodies. This session will include a discussion of the national church, the Diocese of Texas and the authority of bishops, priests and deacons.
