The Weekly Word

June 10, 2001

A warm welcome to our visitors! Those of us who worship and minister in this church pray that your visit to St. Matthew’s will bring you closer to the Christ whom we love and serve, and that the Holy Spirit may fill your life with the love, joy and peace of Jesus Christ. Please fill out one of the visitor cards and a red-bordered visitor name tag available in the chairs in front of you so that we may identify you and welcome you. For newcomer information, call Dedee Norman at 345-8314.

St. Matthew’s offers nursery care from 8:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. on Sundays. Nurseries for children 0-18 months are located in Huffman Hall on the parking lot side of the hallway. The nursery for children 18 months - 4 years is in the Education Building. There is also a cry room upstairs for parents with unhappy babies.

When life's challenges appear overwhelming, we encourage you to call on your St. Matthew's family for love, prayer, the support of a friend, or a meal in time of need. With loving respect and confidentiality, we offer these and many other pastoral care services to our church family. Contact the church office,

345-8314, with needs and requests.

Homebound? If you or someone you know are unable to come to church and would like Holy Communion brought to you on Sunday, please call Jim Sparks at 345-7757.

*Thank You! For all of the financial support this congregation has shown to
the youth through the car wash and through the concert, thank you. We
washed about 60 cars and were blown away by the generous donations that
totaled $993. A special thank you to Cary Michaels and Suzanne Daniel for
sharing their gifts of voice and music at their concert on Pentecost. We
were blessed to receive $647 in donations to support the youth mission efforts this summer.

*What a blessing it was to be a part of the community effort that came
together for a glorious Pentecost celebration! Heartfelt THANKS to all
who willingly gave their time to set-up, decorate, serve food, and
clean-up. The hard work of the Holy Smokers resulted in the best fajita
feast! We are grateful to be a part of this community, Roger and Jane
Buergner

*Youth: St. Matt’s Summer Sunday Movie Series! To prepare our youth for
dealing with a popular culture that often sends conflicting signals, this summer Jay and Kristi Robison will be leading the youth group in a discussion of a different movie (sometimes with clips from other movies) on Sunday nights. We encourage youth to come even if they’ve seen the movie we’re showing or if it sounds "boring"; come in a spirit of fun and see what you can learn! This is a great opportunity to invite friends to youth group. Parents, contact Jay or Kristi at home at 339-4063 (leave a message) with any questions or concerns. First meeting is TONIGHT, June 10, 6 – 8:30 p.m. in the Agape building: short

*Thanks to you…our children’s Chapel and Sunday School programs are staffed for the beginning of this summer. We do still need coverage at 10:00 for Fellowship House (snack time), and we shall need a few helpers in chapel (10:30) and class (9:00) as the summer progresses. Would you be willing to call and offer a week or two? Heather Harmon or Barbara Pitts, 345-8314 x221. Again, thanks!

*On Saturday, June 16, Russ Adams will speak to the Order of St. Luke. Russ is a family counselor at St. David’s Hospital. He will talk about our concerns when we have a loved one dying, when it is time to let go, when we are no longer prolonging life and instead prolonging death. Please join us in B-14. We start with music and prayer at 9:00 a.m. and adjourn at 10:30.

The Spring Ingathering of the United Thank Offering has come….and gone! But the need for your gift has not. Please place it in the plate as it is passed today (or mail it to the Office). Many people thank you.

Coins for Construction: The outreach project for this year's VBS is to support the Sr. High Summer Mission Trip to Juarez. The Sr. High students will be building churches in the city of Juarez. We are collecting coins (or dollar bills or checks!) to purchase tools and building supplies to support this project. Look for the colorful coffee cans in the Commons, Church Office, and Sunday School classes and empty your pockets and coin purses! (You can also drop a check in the offering plate labeled "VBS project"!) Let's collect enough coins to build a whole church!
