Name:              Clyde Carman      

Occupation: Retired from The University of Texas as Associate Director of the

Bureau of Engineering Research. Before that, I worked with Central and Southwest Corp (an electric Utility Holding Company).  I was corporate liaison officer working with The University of Texas in a study on the use of atomic energy as related to the electric utility industry.

         would like to see the completion of the Memorial Garden and a successful Capital Campaign.

What do you like best about St. Matthew’s? (25 words or less)  St.

Matthew’s is made up of a group of loving parishioners that are open and diverse persons, all loving God and making that shown through their walk with Christ.

What would you most like to see accomplished during your three years on the vestry? (50 words or less)

I would like to facilitate the parish accomplishing their mission statement while maintaining fiscal responsibility.  We have very vibrant parishioners with very diverse skills.  All persons in this parish have something to offer to one another and those outside that can bring persons to a loving relationship in Christ.

Pertinent biographical data: 30 years service with IBM in Personnel, Sales,

Engineering and Purchasing; 15+ years of management experience at IBM; 5 years as a Project Executive to Fortune 500 companies; 5 years ownership and management of a Management Consulting firm; 5 years in contract development with hospital providers for Medicaid reimbursement.

people, the leadership, the caring and love that makes St. Matthew’s a unique place to worship.

What would you most like to see accomplished during your three years on

the vestry? (50 words or less)

I hope to see the building of a youth facility that will be a meaningful place for our youth to worship and study.  I would also like to see us add an additional priest to the staff.

What do you like best about St. Matthew’s (25 words or less)? From the first

time I stepped through the doors of St. Matthew’s, I felt encircled in God’s love here; with clergy, staff, and fellow congregants, in weekly services and every ministry in which I have participated.  At St. Matt’s there is always a spirit of love, family, and the fellowship of traveling in our journey with Christ together.

What would you most like to see accomplished (50 words or less)   I would

like to extend the breadth and depth of our parish programs and outreach programs while growing and maintaining our church home.  My goal is that every individual that St. Matthew’s touches feels as loved, blessed and enriched as I have.  To do that we must continue to manage our finances and capital campaign funds creatively and wisely.

Pertinent biographical data (50 words or less)  I spent 25 years in enterprise

software development as Director of Product Marketing and Software Engineering for high-tech, start-ups in Boston, Maryland and Austin.  After a short “attempt” at retirement, I am currently working in both the business and program sides of a faith-based organization.

Current and past parish activities and leadership positions:  Currently

serving on St. Matthew’s Buildings and Grounds Commission.

What do you like best about St. Matthew’s (25 words or less)  As soon as I

met the clergy of St. Matthew’s I knew I had found a special place.  I also love the warmth and welcoming attitude of the congregation.  I especially admire the way everyone came together in its tireless hurricane relief efforts.

What would you most like to see accomplished during your three years on the vestry? (50 words or less)

I would like to increase membership at St. Matthew’s and promote a diverse community. I would also like to see Huffman Hall, the Brides Room and the Cry Room refurbished.  A cared-for, comfortable setting will inspire people to stay and get to know us.  We should let our love for our church shine through our renovation projects.

Pertinent biographical data: I was born in Peru and attended Duke University

where I majored in International Relations/Russian and Anthropology.  I met my wonderful husband there and we settled in Los Angeles. After working in film distribution I became a golf pro and we moved to Austin.  I then owned a golf store and sold it to be a full time mom to sons William (5) and Nicholas( 1 3/4)

What do you like best about St. Matthew's (25 words or less) I love the sense

of God’s presence here, the warm, caring, loving, and friendly atmosphere…the feeling that there is a place for each and every person who walks in the door.

What would you most like to see accomplished (50 words or less)  Keeping

in mind our mission statement, “to know Christ, grow in Christ and share Christ’s love”, I would like to see us make the necessary improvements in our physical facilities to enhance our worship and help make our space more welcoming to new folks as well as our current membership.

Pertinent biographical data: (50 words or less)  Raised in the Baptist Church,

I was drawn to the Episcopal liturgy during high school and was confirmed during my college years.  My husband Darryl of 35 years and I have a grown daughter, Amy, living in southern California.  My chief interests (outside of St. Matthew’s) include Community Bible Study, knitting, sewing, and reading.

What do you like best about St. Matthew’s? (25 words or less)  I like the friendliness and acceptance; the pastoral leadership; the effort to offer new opportunities for parish life development; the outstanding music; and the friendly and helpful church staff.

What would you most like to see accomplished during your three years on

the vestry? (50 words or less)   I would like to help build parish community and increase the parish fellowship so we may know all members in an effort to “share Christ’s love” in the most effective way.

Pertinent biographical data: I was married to Ernestlea for 56 years and have 2 daughters in Austin with 6 grandchildren.  I was baptized at age 13 in the Methodist Church, joined the Presbyterian Church in 1960 and served in several church officer positions over 20 years.  I was confirmed at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in April of 1980. Graduated from Texas A & M with a degree in Electrical Engineering and have lived in Austin since 1966.

What do you like best about St. Matthew’s? (25 words or less)  There are so

many things to like best about St. Matthew’s!  The congregation’s generosity with their time, talents and funds has been truly inspiring to me.

What would you most like to see accomplished during your three years on

the vestry? (50 words or less)   I would like to see the church continue to reach

out – to newcomers, to families, to mature parishioners and to the larger community. Through growing the church our outreach to all these groups can grow.

Pertinent biographical data (50 words or less)  Terry and I have been married for 28 years.  We have two children, James 22, and Julie 19.  I was raised in the Lutheran church.  Terry, James and Julie were all baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew’s.

What do you like best about St. Matthew’s (25 words or less)? The Community of Faith knows this is God’s church, their hospitality and outreach are unlimited.

What would you most like to see accomplished (50 words or less) St. Matt’s Permanent Endowment should be a part of the legacy of every member.  We need a plan and goals to reach to make this a reality.

What do you like best about St. Matthew’s (25 words or less)? The friendliness and connectedness that is present at all our gatherings.  “How was your day?” is really meant and not just a pleasantry.

What would you most like to see accomplished (50 words or less) Steady stewardship of the present Endowment and use of its proceeds to accomplish goals outside our normal bounds of operation. Increased participation in gifting to the future, (via the Endowment) and to the present (via pledging)

What do you like best about St. Matthew’s (25 words or less)? St. Matthew’s is a wonderful, caring church.  It has many opportunities for personal and spiritual growth.  Leslie and I have made many long-term friendships here.

What would you most like to see accomplished (50 words or less)  I have attended Diocesan Council for many years and have participated in three bishop elections. I would like to assure and affirm that churches and the diocese remain faithful to the Episcopal Church.

Pertinent biographical data (50 words or less)  Leslie and I have three children and seven grandchildren.  I have an undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University and a master’s degree from The University of Texas.  I have spent most of my career in the newspaper business as a reporter and editor.  I am currently a student at Austin Community College studying computer science.
