This Little Light of Mine: Raising Up Children in the Light of God’s Love

Raising children who love God and know that God loves them is no simple task.  Almost from the day they are born, our children are bombarded with confusing messages from this world that we live in.  Are there things we can do to help our children handle the pressures, stresses and confusing messages they hear?  Are there things we can do to equip our children to make good choices?  ABSOLUTELY!!!  Parents, grandparents and god parents are invited to join us on Monday, November 12th at 6:30 in the sanctuary as Kathy Dugat shares simple things you can incorporate into your everyday lives to prepare our children to face the world with confidence, knowing that we love them, and more importantly, that God loves them. Child care provided by reservation…contact Marilyn Wright… mjwright@austin.rr.com or 401-8382.  For more information, contact Kathy Dugat (343-7989 or kdugat@austin.rr.com).

Children’s Ministry

Bring a NEW toothbrush and toothpaste to Sunday School! All children are asked to bring a NEW toothbrush and/or a tube of toothpaste to Sunday School on the 18th.  These items will go to SafePlace as part of our Hand in Hand, Doing What We Can Sunday School outreach program.

Hand in Hand…Doing What We Can!  Children's Sunday School  for the month of November will focus on  thanking God for the blessings in our lives.  We will also discover that as we work Hand in Hand, with each person offering whatever they can, WE can make a difference in the world!  We will be working throughout the month to find real, meaningful ways to share our gifts with others. Children four years old through this year’s fifth graders are invited to join us in the basement each Sunday morning at 9:15 to learn about ways we can reach out to share God’s love and help our neighbors near and far away...no matter how old we are!  Questions?  Contact Kathy Dugat (343-7989, kdugat@austin.rr.com).

There is just NOTHING like a good book...especially when you share it with a friend.  The children of our St. Matthew's family will be collecting "gently read" hardback books to donate to Libraries of Love.  Libraries of Love builds libraries for schools in Africa.  We need all kinds of books...fiction, non-fiction, picture books, novels, reference books and funny books!  Look for collection boxes in the Commons, Huffman Hall and in the basement of the sanctuary.  PLEASE help us as we reach out our hand and do what we can to share God's love and make a difference in the world! Questions?  Contact Kathy Dugat (343-7989, kdugat@austin.rr.com)

Have you noticed the BEAUTIFUL new rack for our children's Sunday Worship Bags?  Heartfelt thanks go to Danny Henshaw and Sherm Strance for their handiwork and loving care!

*Outreach in Action:  During the season of Lent, Heifer International is in full swing at St. Matthew’s.  Each year, this project raises funds to empower communities throughout the world by providing food, nutrition, income and education for families.  This year, St. Matthew’s raised $21,013 for Heifer.  Many thanks to Cynthia Wilson for organizing this effort and for all of the generous folks at St. Matthew’s.

Capital Outreach Funds: Thanks to your generosity and continued spirit of giving, funds are available for capital outreach projects from donations pledged through the Building on Our Sure Foundation Campaign.  Parishioners are invited to submit an application on behalf of your favorite ministry or non-profit agency.  Applications will be accepted for capital needs only.  Applications are available in the office or on the St. Matt's website www.stmattsaustin.org and due by November 15.  If you have questions, please contact Esther Garcia, emgarcia@austin.rr.com at 918-3359.

Spring Break Mission Trip to the Makarye Orphanage in Kirov, Russia
St. Matthew’s parishioners have the opportunity to visit the children living in the Makarye Orphanage in Kirov, Russia during Spring Break 2008 (March 8-16, 2008)!  While in Makarye, we will get to know the children through organized group activities and one-on-one visits.  Children’s Hope Chest will coordinate all logistics for the trip.  Anyone interested in traveling to Russia to share God’s love with these wonderful children is invited to join a mission team to Makarye.  For more information on travel details, reservation deadlines, and trip costs, please contact Janie McMahan at jmcduncan2@austin.rr.com or 512.496.8494

*Have you ever thought about running for Vestry?  Each year five new vestry members are elected as five "retire."  It is a three year term.  New members will be elected on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the Annual Meeting.  Requirements for vestry are on the St. Matthew's web site.  The application can be picked up in the church office (it will soon be on the web site as well).  If you have any question please feel free to contact Vickie Blumhagen, Tom Canby, or Merrill Wade.

*STECK PARKING LOT ROCK REMOVAL! If anyone is interested in any of the rocks in the Steck parking lot here's your chance. Contact Vickie Blumhagen (219-5865) and later we'll set up a time when interested people can bring their shovels and take what they'd like from the area along the sidewalk and in the actual parking lot "islands." It will be first come first serve. Some of the rocks near the building will remain as they are needed for drainage issues.   Because of safety concerns that these rocks have presented, the Vestry has decided to include the rock removal in Phase I of Our Building On Our Sure Foundation. Pavers will be put along the sidewalk and cement or exposed aggregate in the parking lot "islands."

Registration began Oct. 7th for the ECW 2008

Annual Women’s Spiritual Retreat

This year’s retreat will be held again at Camp Allen on Feb 15-17, 2008.  Our guest speaker, Kathleen Whitten lives in San Antonio and has been sharing God’s Word and presenting His Son, Jesus Christ for 15 years.  Her topic is DEEP DOWN CHANGE.  Registration deadline is December 21, 2007.   Look for the registration table in the Commons after the Sunday worship services or contact Debbie Marshall
(ph: 926-5424) or Kathy Morris (ph: 918-9373).

Reuse or Donate Old Prescription Containers

Keep old prescription containers out of our landfills by putting them back to work. Reuse them to categorize and store your collections of small items like buttons, beads, craft items, screws, nuts and bolts. You can also donate the amber colored containers for reuse at St. Matthew’s Environmental Stewardship Council cabinet in Huffman Hall. See www.tinyurl.com/27wukf for guidance on how to dispose of unused pharmaceuticals. See the ESC Programs page under Parish Community > Environmental Stewardship Council at www.StMattsAustin.org for a list of items accepted for reuse and recycling.

The Environmental Stewardship Committee offers an easy way to recycle and help Ronald McDonald House at the same time.  Pick up your "house" (collection box) today at the ESC table and start filling it with pull tabs from aluminum cans.  (You can put the rest of the can in your recycle bin.)   Proceeds from selling the pull tabs for scrap aluminum will go directly to the Austin Ronald McDonald House, used by families of critically ill children while they are in the hospital.  There will be a larger house available at church where you can empty the pull tabs from your small house.  The Sunday School children will be part of this endeavor and will return their pull tabs on Dec. 23 so they can see what can be done when we all work together.  We hope that by that time that we will be in the habit and continue this recycling.

*Want to play Volleyball?  I wonder if there is any interest in entering a volleyball team in the Austin Christian Athletic Association winter season? All play is at the Quarries Family Life Center on Monday evenings.  All teams are Co-ed. There must be at least three female players on the court at all times.  These are adult leagues so I would suppose we must limit the lower age to at least high school.   Registration deadline is December 1 and play commences  January 7 2008.  The team fee is $320.   There are two levels of competition.  The sooner we get our registration in the better our chances of being one of the teams selected to compete.  Please contact Ralph Comer, 837-7664, or email him at rdcomer27@sbcglobal.net
